Mid-term conference 06/2011 in St. Petersburg, RU

About us
St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO) is one of the leading Russian Technical universities. It has created one of the biggest Innovation Technologies Centers in the City of Saint Petersburg together with two business Incubators oriented on creating synergies between the research, education and innovation activities at the university. ITMO is traditionally active in the area of knowledge transfer and high-tech entrepreneurship. Its current status of National Research University (NRU) is based on the idea of Entrepreneurial University (“University as a Business”) which stimulates the introduction of innovative approaches to teaching and learning, the commercialization of research results, etc.

SPbSU ITMO was one of the first universities in Russia to start thoughtfully engaging talented youth into hi-tech project activity with an aim towards winning the market. The leading role in this project is naturally devoted to Cross-university student business incubator “QD” – a structure unit of ITMO. Before gaining the status of a business incubator, QD was called Student innovation studio; it was created in spring 2006 by students themselves.

During several years a vibrant community of talented active-minded students aimed at creating their own hi-tech businesses, came up around ITMO. This community, in it’s turn gathered around itself technology experts, business and academia people. Development of a proper ecosystem for youth technology entrepreneurship is one of the main directions of QD’s activities, it serves as a basis for creating a viable innovation infrastructure engaging not only students and professors from different universities, but also many successful entrepreneurs, technology corporations and venture capitalists.

Further development of QD naturally led to creating a unique Master’s Corporate Faculty (Faculty of Entrepreneurship) based on it’s activities. The faculty incorporates all of the ITMO’s resources, including business incubation programs, intellectual property, funding opportunities and, of course, technology experts and professionals in order to provide the students with the required infrastructure and ecosystem to spur creation of innovative high-tech businesses. Each student of Master’s corporate faculty automatically becomes a resident of QD’s business incubator, which provides them with technology and business mentors, allows for usage of ITMO’s IP, laboratories and prototyping facilities, gives them a shortcut to fundraising and venture capital. Starting September, 2010, first 26 hand-picked students from the top technology-oriented universities of Russia (including Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Petrozavodsk, Nizhny Novgorod and Saint-Petersburg itself) are starting their studies on Master’s corporate faculty.

Why we participate in Best Agers
• We demonstrate to the EU partners Russian technologies of development of youth hi-tech entrepreneurship and cross-generation interaction in this area (on the basis of Cross-university student business incubator “QD”). We show to EU partners how start-ups are being promoted in Russian partners institution
• We organize mutually enriching interaction of 55+ experts (“best agers”) with young entrepreneurs. The former teach the latter and in exchange receive the highly needed feeling of involvement and inclusion. We bringing together Russian “Best Agers”, students and project partners, creating cross-generation environment.
• We develop ITMO by addressing the issue of the people of the third age have increasing expectations in terms of full inclusion in society and economy. This way we come closer to creation of Russian-EU network for professionals, trainers and experts in seniors' education. We show how Universities can integrate Contexts
• We develop ITMO as a center of social life. The project brings new aims and meanings to University development: realization of Life Long Learning Concept, improved management, external funding, ring of partners, entrepreneurial atmosphere.
• We bring Russia into BSR context s of strategic Importance

What´s happening right now
We work on turning Q Camp - the pilot project born in October 2010 with in “Best Agers” project - into a regular pan-Baltic event on Cross-generation Dialogue between Best Ager experts and young hi-tech entrepreneurs.
